Linux, and free/open source software projects of all kinds, give you the power to control what software you run, when you run it, when and whether you load upgrades and new releases, and just how much you pay for the privilege.
I've been using Linux as my primary operating system exclusively since 2000, and don't have any plans to change that. In all those years, I've enjoyed freedom from viruses and other malware, mandatory upgrades, complicated software installations, and expensive software that just doesn't work the way I want it to.
